The cyber threat - a real threat

We read about it almost every day - cyber attacks, hacker attacks, denial of service attacks. The statistics speak for themselves. Globally, the number of attacks increased by 38% in 2022 compared to the previous year. That's an average of 1168 attacks per week per organisation.

Attacks on the infrastructure of companies, or countries, can be an effective and devastating way to wage war. Many cyber criminals are also constantly finding new opportunities for different types of fraud, where AI technology can be used to quickly create malware and send convincing and credible emails through Chat GPT, for example. Messages that trick the recipient into clicking on a file, downloading something or giving out personal information.

For many companies, the threat is real and very much present. In PwC's CEO Survey 2022, 49% of global business leaders say they see cyber threats as the biggest threat to their own business in the coming year. This is not unfounded, with one in four companies experiencing cyber-attacks in the last three years, according to PwC's Global Digital Trust - a survey based on information from more than 3,500 executives from 65 countries.

Attacks are becoming more sophisticated and have greater consequences. Some of the most common threats that have emerged are ransomware and so-called DDoS attacks - extortion and denial of service attacks. In many cases, it is not the information itself that is coveted, but rather the aim is to cause damage to the organisation under attack - usually to demand a ransom to recover the information.

A cyber attack can take seconds to carry out and it only takes one point of entry to penetrate, attack and undermine the information and infrastructure of an entire company.

We humans are simply the weakest link when it comes to cybersecurity. All it takes is for us to make one small mistake and the damage can be done. It has been said many times before - knowledge, vigilance and prevention with clear procedures are what is needed to minimise the risks.
